What is IDEXlab?

Appalachian State University's IDEXlab (Integrative Design Experience Laboratory) intends to redefine traditional pedagogical approaches to the study of the built environment in higher education.

A curriculum program built around the office/studio incorporates learning objectives from multiple courses in a collaborative, interdisciplinary project environment. Working in a professional office-like setting, we participate in the role of our concentration to plan, design, build, and commission real projects for real clients, while faculty serve as both educators and facilitators.

App Builds a Home — App State’s IDEXlab designs zero energy ready home

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University students encountered both challenges and rewards when designing a zero energy ready house for App Builds a Home, a project to build a home from the ground up in partnership with Watauga County Habitat for Humanity (WCHH).

Appalachian’s Integrative Design Experience Laboratory (IDEXlab) — was commissioned for the design, which pulled double duty by serving as Appalachian’s entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2019 Solar Decathlon Challenge held in Golden, Colorado, in February. The IDEXlab team’s design was named as a finalist in the competition.

IDEXlab Teams Named Finalists for 2019 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge

On February 27, two teams of IDEXlab students from Appalachian State University were selected as finalists in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2019 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge in Golden, Colorado.  The teams received two of the 48 finalist invitations sent to colleges internationally.

The competition challenges students to work with industry partners to design a high-performance, net zero energy-ready building to address real-world in the building industry.
